Beginning of a New Journey with Uplift Charity –
As I begin my fourth week as the new case manager with Uplift Charity, I’d like to reflect on my experience. Before obtaining employment at Uplift, toward the end of my college career I began to become interested in the phenomenon of migration. My focus was characterizing migration patterns with regards to issues of the international refugee crisis, which was becoming increasingly prevalent in the media, propelling public discourse on the matter. Discourse throughout recent history has consisted of issues relating to migrant integration and its effect on receiving countries.
I was also curious in understanding the way vulnerable individuals or families are affected in their place of residence. Are their experiences similar to newcomers arriving in receiving countries? My time at Uplift has allowed me to engage with our local community by building connections in understanding with our applicants who have shared their stories with us about their integration into a new society and the struggles faced by vulnerable populations. Throughout this experience of providing resources and services, I have realized the necessity of being open-minded, critical, and creative in order to collaborate with our community to implement a transformative mindset that guides them toward their self-sufficiency.
During my time at Uplift Charity, I have been able to take part in a few programs and services that we provide to our applicant families. This includes the annual Eid carnival & meat distribution, monthly food pantry, and the weekly tutoring program for children of recent refugees. All these programs showcase the goal and mission of Uplift Charity which is to work together to build together for individual and community engagement, these are spaces and interactions that support our applicant development as participants within the communities they contribute to everyday.
